Troubleshooting label printing

Concrete steps for testing label alignment, browser print settings, sheet selection, scaling, margins, and partial-sheet reuse.

Start with plain paper

Before using expensive label stock, print the label sheet on regular paper. Hold the regular-paper print behind a real label sheet and put both up to a light. The label boxes, QR codes, barcodes, and text should land inside the physical label cells. If the plain-paper print is off, do not burn a real sheet yet; fix print settings first.

Use the calibration or debug preview when available. Calibration output can show trim outlines, label position numbers, page dimensions, margin guides, and pitch guides. Normal label output should not show those guides, but calibration is useful while checking a printer, browser, or sheet definition. If calibration lines match the physical sheet and the real label content does not, the issue is probably in the template. If calibration lines are off, the issue is probably page size, scaling, orientation, or sheet selection.

Check browser print settings

Label sheets are different from reports. Reports need safe document margins; labels need exact physical positions. In the browser print dialog, set scale to 100 percent or Default only if the browser does not resize the page. Do not use Fit to page, Shrink to fit, or any setting that changes the physical size. For Avery-style sheets, added margins can push the whole sheet out of alignment, so use the setting that preserves the app’s page size exactly.

Confirm the paper size and orientation match the selected sheet. Avery 61527, 61526, and 61525 have different rows, columns, label sizes, and safe areas. The app should derive the page and label positions from the selected backend sheet definition, but the printer dialog can still override the final paper handling. If the preview looks right and the physical print is shifted, check printer scaling, paper size, borderless options, and whether the printer is applying a non-printable-margin adjustment.

For labels, margins in the browser dialog should normally be None because the sheet definition already includes the physical label margins and pitch. For reports, estimates, picklists, and other document printouts, Pluck adds its own safe paper inset so the content does not touch the edge even if the browser margin is set to None. That difference is intentional: documents need readable breathing room, and labels need exact geometry.

When reused sheets print wrong

For a reused sheet, choose the first open label position instead of trying to move the template. Earlier cells should stay blank, and later cells should keep their normal geometry. If you choose position 17, the first 16 cells should remain empty and the first printed label should land exactly where position 17 lives on the physical sheet. If the labels resize or shift upward, stop and check the print route before continuing.

Tracked sheets are meant to remember used positions, but they do not replace visual checking. If a tracked sheet marker is printed in a gutter or margin, verify that it does not overlap labels, the Avery logo, or printer non-printable margins. If the marker uses a label cell by choice, account for that used cell. Reprint should reopen the original print preview with the same planned labels so a misprint can be recovered without creating a different sequence.

When the printed content is hard to scan

If a barcode does not scan reliably, check the value length, element width, print darkness, and whether human-readable text is crowding the code. Code 39 gets dense quickly; long values may need a wider element or a QR code instead. QR codes should have enough quiet space and should use strong dark/light contrast. If custom colors are used, test them with the actual scanner before printing a full run.

Images and custom fonts can also affect print readiness. If the browser print dialog opens before a logo or font appears, close the dialog, wait for the preview to finish rendering, and use the preview Print button. If a custom font fails, use a built-in readable font until the upload or font entitlement issue is resolved. The label should be readable first and pretty second; a beautiful label that does not scan is not doing its job.
